First and foremost I feel the need to tell you what is Google Trends and what you can do with it. Google Trends is a web site (and a web app) which displays data on Google searches made throughout the Globe. With this instrument you can either know about the most searched keywords and which one are trending (hence the name ‘Google Trends’) and the results are diplayed with diagrams or can be downloaded on your computer. The results are not displayed in number of views, instead Google assigns them a value from 0 to 100.
Now that I have cleared what Google Trends is and what it can do, let me tell you, I was surprised by the results for 2022. I will share some of my insights at the end of the post.
The most globally searched keyword in 2022 was Wordle, pun not intended. For those who do not know (and I did not), Wordle is a browser based game developed in 2021 by Josh Wardle (my ancient Roman ancestors would say ‘nomen, omen’), in which the player has to guess a 5 letter word with a maximum of 6 attempts. Type the keyword into Google, and placed first will appear a version of the game hosted on the New York Times’ website (link : https://www.nytimes.com/games/wordle/index.html).
In second place comes ‘India vs England’, which shockingly enough (at least for me) refers to a cricket match, held in July 2022.
Third and Fourth came ‘Ukraine’ and ‘Queen Elizabeth’, respectively referring to the war between Russia and Ukraine and the death of Queen Elizabeth I of England.
Fifth and Seventh, again cricket, with ‘Ind vs SA’ (the latter standing for South Africa) and ‘India vs West Indies’.
Sixth came ‘World Cup’, the international football competition, which was held in Qatar towards the end of 2022 and was won by Argentina.
Eight came ‘iPhone 14’, the archfamous smartphone from Apple, which was released during the fall of 2022.
Ninth came ‘Jeffrey Dahmer’, a tv series on Netflix based on the homonymous American serial killer.
Tenth was ‘Indian Premier League’, cricket yet again.
There are many useful insights from this chart. Personally there are 3 I found most surprising.
The first insight is that even keywords searched during a short period of time, can influence the global trends for one year. In fact, if we dig deeper and click on ‘India vs England’, we see that the most searches were done mainly from 3-9 and from 10-16 of July, respectively with a score of a 100 points for the former and 81 points for the latter. A second peak (but less steep) occurs between 6-12 of November.
The second insight is that the nations that us Europeans consider ‘Third World Countries’ can influence the global results with their searches. The ones responsible for entry number two were India, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Nepal and Bahrein. In 2021 the same countries achieved entry number one, another cricket match, ‘Australia vs India’, again over a short period of time.
The third insight is that although some regions can influence the global trends with their keywords, a particular keyword is not necessarily the most searched word in any of the nations which influenced the result. To be clearer, although India was the nation which influenced the popular search ‘India vs England’, that keyword was not the most searched of that country during the year. It was not even one of top 10 most searched keywords.
That concludes my insights and data analysis for the Google Global Trends for 2022. Another lesson learned.
